In Loving Memory of a beautiful wife, mother, daughter, sister, sister-in-law and Aunt.
Anne Veronica Devlin born 18th December and was the middle child born to parents Matthew & Veronica.
Anne grew up in Reservoir. Anne had treasured memories of helping her other siblings and father in building their new forever home in Reservoir. Mum would often talk about how her brother and sisters would dance around the kitchen after dinner which would go long into the nights dancing and listening to music.
In her career, she was a talented secretary who had both essential skills. Being a wonderful typist and amazing at shorthand a skill that is missing today. (As a child you could never decipher Mum’s Christmas shopping lists or birthday surprises as she would write it all out in shorthand). Mum also had truly wonderful handwriting she really had a unique style.
Mum along with her brother & sisters would attend the Saturday night balls and dinner dances. Mum always looked beautiful. In our eyes she was “the belle of the ball”. Mum had impeccable style and was always stunning in any outfit she chose. Her fashion sense was both elegant and sophisticated making her stand out.
It was at one of these dinner dances that Mum met her future husband, Barry. They made such a lovely couple and the way they dressed complemented each other. Mum used to joke that Barry was not a dancer and that she would have to take the lead and drag him around the dance floor. They always laughed about it. They loved spending time together and it was evident to everyone around them. Their bond was so strong and their love so deep that it was no surprise when they eventually decided to get married.
On their wedding day, both Anne & Barry looked magnificent although Dad would often joke that when he first met Mum, she was blonde, however he married a brunette as Anne’s father Matthew did not want to walk her down the aisle as a tainted painted rose – and Anne being a very loving and loyal daughter did not want to upset her Dad and decided to dye her hair back to her natural colour for her big day. Nonetheless she looked gorgeous. They had a lovely day with all their family and friends in attendance.
After purchasing their first new house in Bundoora, Mum put her heart and soul into transforming the house into a warm and welcoming home for her family. Anne was meticulous in the way she kept the home tidy and there was always a small giggle how you could not stand or step on the fluffy white mats that were placed on the carpet as a special feature.
The following year Anne & Barry welcomed their first child a daughter and a several years later a son. Anne was an amazing Mum who was dedicated to looking after her family, visiting her elderly parents daily and was a true Stepford wife. Anne always had the home looking clean & tidy, Anne also went out of her way to make sure she looked presentable for her husband when he came home from a hard day at work by making sure that she had a little bit of lipstick on, and her hair was done nicely. Anne took pride in her appearance, and this was an enjoyment for her, not a task.
When the kids were older Anne had a desire to go back to work. Anne was a stay-at-home Mum for 19 years and she was looking for something challenging. A lot had changed since she was last in the work force with the invention of computers, but this did not stop Anne. Anne was determined to learn as much as she could about how to use the computer and she was amazing at learning. Although it was a challenge at first Anne successfully integrated back into the workforce with ease. Mum ended up in a role as a personal assistant for a large company and she assisted several managers within her role. Mum was such a valuable member of her team and got along so incredibly well with her peers and colleagues. Mum was a very diligent and enthusiastic worker who very rarely took a day off work sick as she was quite a healthy person, stayed with the same company for well over 20 years.
As Anne and Barry were both working extremely hard without the financial burden of children they would spend their weekends down the beach. Many fun times were had, which included walks along the beach, feeding her friends (seagulls), spending summer with the kids and other relatives sitting on the beach or playing beach cricket. Anne and Barry enjoyed each other’s company and their weekends away were treasured.
In 2011 our family received the shocking news that Mum had pancreatic cancer. It rocked our world, we could not believe it, especially since Mum was healthy and looked after herself. Whilst it was extremely upsetting, and emotional news. As much as this was mentally, physically and emotionally draining for Mum she always put others first, even if she was having a bad day where she felt just dreadfully ill. Anne was determined that she was going to do everything within her power to beat this cancer. She tried every lotion and potion that she could. Even her doctors were amazed at how well she was doing considering she had this insidious disease.
Sadly, in May of 2014 we lost our beautiful wife, mother, sister and auntie. Anne was amazing she fought this disease for 3 years and we are so thankful to have had her for this extra time as we were given only a few months.
Mum we miss you to infinity and life not the same without you in it. Love always your husband and kids xxxx
To know her, and to be loved by her was a privilege. The essence of the woman Anne will live on forever in the hearts and minds of those that love her.
